Sunbeam Adventures
Outdoor adventures are for everyone
For many local families raising children who need additional support and care, finding outdoor programs that are truly welcoming and accessible can feel nearly impossible. The Sunbeam Program was created to help close that gap for Midcoast families. Designed with thoughtful accommodations and a supportive pace, Sunbeam offers outdoor experiences where incredible kids—especially those who may need extra emotional, behavioral, or neurological support—can safely explore, build friendships, and grow in confidence.
We chose the name Sunbeam intentionally. Just like a beam of sunlight breaking through the forest canopy, this program is meant to create a warm, welcoming opening where every child can shine. In nature, a sunbeam finds its way through branches and leaves, reaching places that might otherwise feel shaded or overlooked. In the same spirit, Sunbeam is about making space—creating a path for children with different needs to experience the joy, wonder, and belonging that the outdoors can offer when programs are thoughtfully designed for them.
Sunbeam is led by Lauren Cucci and Debi Rogers, who also serve as the Taproot Leadership team. They design programs that are responsive to social and emotional variations. Activities are intentionally structured to reduce barriers and create an environment where kids can participate in ways that feel safe, empowering, and joyful.
We encourage caregivers and educators to reach out to us to talk about your child or student’s individual needs to determine if Sunbeam is the right fit.. While our campus grounds are not yet fully universally accessible, improving accessibility is a priority in our strategic plan for the coming year. We are committed to growing in ways that welcome more youth and families into this community.
We also recognize that programs like Sunbeam are rare in Maine, and cost should not be a barrier. Our team works with families to support program fees whenever possible, helping ensure that children who would benefit from these experiences can participate. Above all, we want families to feel confident that their children are in good hands—supported by trained professionals and surrounded by opportunities for new friendships, meaningful mentorship, and unforgettable adventures in the outdoors.
This summer, the sunbeam program caught the attention of South Bristol’s very own Don Carrigan, from News Center Maine's 207 TV program. Take a few minutes to watch the joy!
