Campus for Mindful Adventure

We believe local, nature-based intervention helps stem the tide of the mental health crisis that disproportionately affects Maine’s youth. Our non-clinical, therapeutic offerings have made an enormous impact on area youth, families, and our collective community. Now, we are setting down roots, giving kids a home to become stewards of themselves and the land.

SMALL GIFT. MIGHTY IMPACT.

Our Intended Use

The long term vision for the campus is a nature-based wellness center that would allow Hearty Roots to serve local kids and families from early childhood into early adulthood. All of these components shared below will take time, and we will grow towards these goals in small, incremental steps.

In year one, we plan to develop a trail network, build a couple of PRIVIES, and create a parking area. We aim to simply be on the land with kids, to focus our energy towards programming, and then let the land and our vision come together, as the time is ripe.

Heartquarters & Facilities: Office and meeting space for our growing staff team and the community. This central space will include bathrooms, kitchen, washroom, showers, storage, and necessary waste and water management facilities.

Yurts & Tent Platforms: Rustic shelters for education, experiential activities, and leadership training intentionally nestled in the woods to be used during inclement weather and overnight stays.

Reflective & Gathering Space: A free-flowing, adaptive, yet grounding space for kids, families, staff, donors and the community.

Gear Barn: A year-round sheltered, flexible space for gear storage, active engagement and sensory experiences, including a low climbing wall, creative expression, and more.

Hearty Roost Cabin: A multi-functional cozy space for family Taproot supports, monetizing overnight stays, and a give-back incentive for in-kind labor toward our capital campaign.

Care Farming & Farm Education: Traditionally, care farms welcome people to come and heal by participating in farm activities in whatever way they can. Farm Education Programs will add more opportunities for participants to deeply connect with the land.

Mindful Adventure & Movement Space: Additional adventure infrastructure to provide diverse active engagement opportunities that connect mind and body, and allow for free-flow expression between larger groups.

Multi-Use Trail Network: The main trail network will connect all of our core infrastructure and will support multiple uses including hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Sensory & Experiential Trail: Located close to our Heartquarters, this accessible trail will offer visitors and program participants an immersive experience in all things Hearty Roots, like our Reflection Tree, quotes from kids and families, and space to expand the heart and mind.
