Raised on Maui, Melissa has never felt quite right indoors for too long — that pull toward the outdoors is part of what drew her to Hearty Roots in the first place. She lives in the Damariscotta area with her husband and three young kids, the older two whom are lucky enough to spend their summers in Hearty Roots programs. Watching them come home muddy, tired, and happy is a pretty good reminder of why this work matters.

By day, Melissa is a board-certified pediatrician (since 2019) and Associate Medical Director of Pediatrics at MaineHealth Lincoln Health in Damariscotta. Her path to medicine was shaped early by time spent with underserved populations in New Orleans and in Israel/Palestine, and that same instinct — to show up for people who are often overlooked — has stayed with her ever since. Supporting kids who need an extra hand, especially those on the margins, is what she cares most about — in her clinic and on the Hearty Roots board alike.
