Heather Abello

Board member - Treasurer

Heather is the winner of a 2023 Leaders & Luminaries award for her work with Hearty Roots. She is the mother of two happy Hearty Roots campers. Formerly an outdoor educator, now an indoor educator (but still an outdoor enthusiast), she has seen kids find personal success in the challenge zone that nature affords.  Being passionate about youth reaching their full potential and feeling connected to nature, she believes wholeheartedly in the mission of Hearty Roots and is ever grateful to be part of this amazing organization.

Heather studied Biology at Fordham University and Oceanography at the University of Maine. She has been a sailing instructor, outdoor recreation leader, inner-city youth swim coach, marine science educator, teacher, tutor, tech operations manager, and currently a high school teacher and tech integrator.  As a mother, she looks for ways to build outdoor memories with her teens.  As she prefers outdoors to in, in her free time she can be found on the water, in the garden, skiing, camping, or even just enjoying the woods trail with her dog - and cheering for her kids and local youth at various sporting events.
